CDBS (Child Dental Benefits Schedule)

  • April 13, 2022

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule or CDBS is an Australian government-sponsored dental program that provides essential dental services to young children over the age of two.

This dental program comes with $1026 in benefits and covers most general dentistry services, such as fillings, root canals, and extractions. This program does not include dental treatment under anaesthetic, cosmetic dental work, and orthodontic treatment.

Services Australia notifies eligible participants, and there is no need for pre-registration to qualify for the service.

What Does a Child Need to Be Eligible for the CDBS?

For a child to qualify for the CDBS, they must meet the following requirements:

  • Their family must be receiving an Australian Government benefits payment, such as the Family Tax Benefit Part A
  • Eligible children must be aged 17 years or under

The Services Australia website has more information about the program and the eligibility requirements for children to receive dental treatment under the CDBS. Visit their website here to learn more.

You can also check out the eligibility of your child for the CDBS by calling 132 011 or checking your myGov Medicare account online.

How to Access the CDBS for Your Child

You can find out about getting the CDBS for your child via public dental channels, including school-based dental services and private dental surgeries.

Public service dental clinics make getting the service easy and convenient for families. When your child attends a dental clinic, as the parent, you will fill in some consent forms, which allows the CDBS to bill for the health services provided.

For children accessing dental care via the Primary School Mobile Dental Program, the CDBS includes consent forms with every parent information pack.

There are no gap fees for services provided at public surgeries, and this applies even if the child exhausts the $1,026 benefit cap or if children need dental treatment not covered by the CDBS. This ensures that all children receive the highest standards of care whether they are eligible for the CDBS or not.
